Boulder Juniors is designed for older kids eager to learn bouldering in a fun and safe environment. The focus here is to build on the fundamental climbing skills, improving agility, balance, and coordination, while learning to navigate more complex routes.
The climbing sessions are not just about bouldering; we aim to develop social skills by maintaining consistency in groups, encouraging friendship, and team spirit.
Our sessions are split into two groups: NICAS Levels 1-2 and NICAS Levels 3+. These NICAS levels can be worked through in our clubs and helps to keep track of your child’s progress. You can read more about NICAS below.

NICAS Climbing is a UK-wide scheme designed to promote climbing development and accredit individual achievement on artificial climbing structures. They’re a starting point for people wishing to take up climbing and mountaineering, from novice to experienced, starting from age 7.
NICAS Climbing has five progressive levels of award for complete novices to expert climbers. The scheme is split into two parts: Part one contains Levels 1 to 3 and part two contains Levels 4 and 5. We use the levels as a basis for our sessions, not a tick-sheet – it may take longer to complete than the ‘NICAS minimum time’ as skills and techniques are worked on fully and to a high standard.
Our clubs are split into age and level, with Boulder Monkeys for ages 7-10 and Boulder Juniors for ages 11+, in either a level 1&2 club or level 3.
NICAS registration and logbooks are strongly recommended for our youth clubs, but are optional. Please speak to a receptionist to purchase your NICAS logbook and register for the scheme.
What do we teach during the sessions?
Here at Flashpoint Cardiff we have developed a 10 week rolling session plan with a different climbing technique being taught each week.
The 10 sessions are: footwork, weight transfer, route reading and tactics, footswaps, dynamic movement, bridging, laybacking, twisting, flagging, and drop knees.
During every session the instructors will also teach the appropriate safety rules and skills and ensure every participant is following these.
Billing
Your monthly payment reserves your child’s space on their club. We run billing on the 1st of the month or shortly after. You will be billed in full for your child’s club each month, regardless of how many sessions there are in the month. This means that some months you will be able to attend a session every week, however club sessions do not run outside of term times – see our term timetable tab for our term dates. Please note that weekend clubs average 1 session per term less than some other clubs, but are charged at the same price due to their popularity. You child is welcome to start at any point during the month, but it will be billed in full – so it may be prudent to wait a week until the next month for the best value!
Cancellations
If you wish to leave the clubs you must let us know your leaving date no later than 2 weeks before you wish to leave. Your child is welcome to stay until the very end of their last month. You will not receive a partial refund if you stop attending part way through a month, or if there are weeks without sessions. It might be good to see which month is the best to finish on to make the most of your monthly bill.
You can cancel from the Cancellation page online.
Injuries, Holidays & Missed Sessions
Unfortunately, we are unable to freeze or refund payments if your child is unable to attend their club due to being injured, sick, going on holiday or being absent. Your monthly payment reserves your child’s space in their club. We will not provide partial refunds for weeks where climbing is missed due to injury, personal or national holidays or any other reason.
